James Purifoy, the 51-year-old owner of a Rockford restaurant, intentionally set fire to his establishment on January 22, 2023, and then filed a false insurance claim to collect $305,400. Purifoy, who owned the 15th and Chris restaurant, left the premises before police and fire personnel arrived to put out the fire, and later provided false statements to investigators to hide his involvement.
The arson investigation, led by the ATF and assisted by the Rockford Police Department and the FBI, uncovered Purifoy’s deceitful scheme. He pleaded guilty to a federal arson charge in January 2026 and was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston.
Purifoy’s actions were deemed ‘reckless and deceitful’ by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica S. Maveus, who argued that arson poses a significant risk to bystanders and first responders. The joint effort between the ATF and the Rockford Fire Department resulted in a successful case closure, sending a clear message that such crimes will be held accountable.
The sentence serves as a warning to others who may engage in similar behavior, emphasizing the severity of the consequences for arson and insurance fraud. Purifoy’s case highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in combating such crimes.
