SCRANTON, Pennsylvania – In a shocking case of prison corruption, Richol Griner, a 44-year-old inmate from Washington, DC, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for possessing 49 units of Suboxone, a potent narcotic drug that contains the opioid, buprenorphine.
According to court documents, Griner was caught with the illicit substance on or about March 1, 2019, while serving a prior prison term at the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill (FCI-Schuylkill), located in Minersville, Pennsylvania.
The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBP) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), revealed that Griner had been secretly stockpiling the controlled substance, violating the terms of his imprisonment.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffery St. John prosecuted the case, bringing Griner to justice for his egregious crime.
The sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani on March 4, 2021, will run consecutively to Griner’s existing federal sentence.
Griner’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle to maintain order within the nation’s correctional facilities.
The exact charges against Griner were not specified in the court documents, but he was found guilty of possessing a narcotic drug while in prison, a serious offense that warrants severe punishment.
