Robert Acosta, Double Murder, New York 1997

In a shocking turn of events, Robert Acosta has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in the brutal double murder of Alex Ventura and Aneudis Almonte in the Bronx, New York, on December 22, 1997.

Acosta, the former leader of a large-scale drug trafficking organization in northern Manhattan, had hired Jose Diaz to kill the victims after they stole drug money from him. Diaz and a co-conspirator ambushed the victims in a stairwell, resulting in their tragic deaths.

According to prosecutors, Acosta paid Diaz approximately $12,000 for the murders. Diaz was also sentenced to life in prison for his role in the crime.

U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman praised the outstanding investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New York Police Department, and the Special Agents of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

The case was handled by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit, with Assistant United States Attorneys Laurie A. Korenbaum, Michael K. Krouse, and Nicholas W. Chiuchiolo leading the prosecution.

The sentencing marks a major victory in the fight against violent crime in New York City. The victims’ families can finally find closure, knowing that their loved ones’ killers have been brought to justice.
