Robert Crayton, 48, Sentenced to 216 Months for Cocaine Trafficking in Indiana

HAMMOND, IN – In a major blow to the region’s narcotics trade, Robert Crayton, 48, of Evanston, Illinois, has been sentenced to 216 months in prison for his role in a cocaine trafficking ring.

According to federal authorities, Crayton was stopped by Lake County Sheriff’s officers on I-65 on March 14, 2023. During the search of his vehicle, officers discovered approximately 2 kilograms of cocaine hidden behind the center console and under the front passenger area floor mat.

Crayton’s travel plans revealed that he had flown from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Atlanta, Georgia, before driving back to Illinois when apprehended by law enforcement.

This case marks the latest in a string of high-profile cocaine trafficking cases in the region. Crayton’s sentencing comes after a guilty verdict on charges of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine, as well as possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

In addition to his prison sentence, Crayton will also serve 6 years of supervised release following his release from prison.

This case was investigated by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Merrillville Field Office, with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s South Central Laboratory. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael J. Toth and Ambris Saravanan.

Crayton’s prior felony drug distribution convictions, including a prior federal conviction for distribution of crack cocaine near a public elementary school, were also taken into account during sentencing.
