Rochester Mail Thief Faces Decade Behind Bars
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Nathan Romar Arnold, 23, is staring down a potential ten-year prison sentence after admitting to a brazen scheme to steal mail from multiple USPS locations in the Rochester area. U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced Arnold’s guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr. today, capping a swift investigation into the thefts.
Arnold pleaded guilty to both possession of a United States Postal Service key and theft of mail – charges that carry a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a hefty $250,000 fine. The thefts weren’t random acts of opportunity; Arnold and his accomplices specifically targeted mail receptacles near the Brighton Station Post Office on N. Winton Road, the Greece Post Office on Latta Road, and the Jefferson Road Post Office during a two-day spree on October 1st and 2nd, 2023.
The key used to access the mailboxes wasn’t obtained legally. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Katelyn M. Hartford, who is prosecuting the case, the key was stolen from a USPS letter carrier. Arnold then allegedly used it to systematically unlock mail receptacles, pilfering mail with the intent to keep the contents for personal use and profit. The specifics of what Arnold hoped to gain from the stolen mail remain under wraps, but investigators suggest the motive was financial.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, under the direction of Inspector in Charge Ketty Larco-Ward of the Boston Division. They were joined by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Todd Baxter, and the Greece Police Department, under the command of Chief Michael Wood. The combined forces quickly zeroed in on Arnold and his associates, bringing the operation to a halt.
Arnold’s plea brings a measure of closure to this case, but the sentencing phase looms large. Judge Geraci has scheduled Arnold’s sentencing for September 25, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. The courtroom will be the final stop in this saga, where the full weight of the law will be determined. The Grimy Times will be there to report the outcome.
This case serves as a stark reminder that tampering with the U.S. Mail is a serious federal offense. The Postal Inspection Service takes these crimes seriously, and those who attempt to exploit the postal system will face swift and decisive prosecution. Expect further updates as sentencing approaches.
