Roderick Silva, 45, a former Miami-Dade Police Department detective, has been charged with aiding and abetting a conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana and extortion.
According to the indictment, Silva provided confidential police information to members of the Santiesteban family and their associates, who were growing hydroponic marijuana in south west Miami-Dade County. The family members had previously been convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute over 1000 marijuana plants in 2012.
The indictment alleges that Silva provided the family members with information about when police were investigating them and when they might have their marijuana grow houses searched. He also allegedly provided advice on how to avoid and deflect police investigations.
Furthermore, the indictment charges that Silva received $1500 in cash from the Santiesteban family members on January 5, 2011, in exchange for maintaining his silence about their illegal activities.
“We are especially saddened when a public servant misuses his position of trust to engage in criminal conduct,” said U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer. “Today’s indictment sends a message to all public officials who commit crime that they are not above the law and that they will be brought to justice.”
Roderick Silva faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years in prison up to life in prison if convicted of the aiding and abetting charge. He also faces a penalty of up to 20 years in prison for the extortion charge.
The Miami-Dade Police Department and the FBI investigated the case, which highlights the importance of maintaining public trust in law enforcement.
Roderick Silva’s indictment is a reminder that public officials who engage in criminal conduct will be held accountable for their actions.
