NEW ORLEANS, LA – Rodney Offray, 49, of New Orleans, is facing serious federal charges after allegedly peddling deadly fentanyl and heroin on the streets. A grand jury unsealed a three-count indictment Friday, detailing Offray’s alleged involvement in distributing the dangerous narcotics throughout the city. This isn’t some small-time operation; authorities say Offray was moving substantial quantities of the drugs.
According to the indictment, Offray distributed heroin and fentanyl on July 24, 2023. This initial offense carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison, alongside a hefty $1,000,000 fine, a minimum of three years of supervised release after imprisonment, and a $100 mandatory assessment fee. But the charges don’t stop there.
The indictment further alleges that Offray upped the ante on July 28 and July 31, 2023, distributing 40 grams or more of fentanyl and an unspecified amount of heroin. These subsequent counts carry significantly stiffer penalties. If convicted, Offray could face a mandatory minimum of 5 years, and up to 40 years behind bars, a potential fine of up to $5 million, at least 4 years of supervised release, and the aforementioned $100 assessment.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans was quick to emphasize that the indictment is merely an accusation. “The guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt,” Evans stated. This is standard procedure, but the sheer volume of charges suggests the feds believe they have a strong case against Offray. The investigation was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Benjamin Myers, of the Narcotics Unit, is handling the prosecution. The ATF’s involvement suggests a possible connection between the drug trafficking and other criminal activity, though details remain scarce. The Eastern District of Louisiana has seen a surge in fentanyl-related cases, making this indictment a crucial step in combating the opioid crisis gripping the city.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it develops. Offray’s next court appearance has yet to be scheduled, but expect a vigorous defense. The stakes are incredibly high, and a conviction could mean decades of Offray’s life spent in federal prison. This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of fentanyl and heroin on communities across the nation.
