DEL RIO, TEXAS – Guillermo Rodriguez-Sanchez, 42, of Mexico City, will spend the next 12 years and 7 months in federal prison after being sentenced today for attempting to flood American streets with cocaine and heroin. The sentence was handed down by a federal judge in Del Rio, bringing a close to a case that exposed a sophisticated smuggling operation.
The conviction stemmed from an incident on March 16, 2016, when Rodriguez-Sanchez attempted to cross the border at Eagle Pass Port of Entry Number One. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers weren’t fooled. A search of the 2007 Toyota Tundra he was driving revealed a cleverly concealed compartment built into the air intake manifold. Inside, they found four bricks of cocaine and one brick of heroin – a substantial haul meant to bypass law enforcement.
Federal prosecutors laid out the evidence before a jury, who found Rodriguez-Sanchez guilty on October 19, 2016, of one count of importing cocaine and one count of importing heroin. The total weight of the seized narcotics clocked in at approximately four kilograms of cocaine and 1.4 kilograms of heroin, with an estimated street value of around $200,000. Despite the damning evidence, Rodriguez-Sanchez initially claimed he had no knowledge of the drugs hidden within his vehicle.
The investigation, a joint effort by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), demonstrated the ongoing commitment of federal agencies to disrupt the flow of illegal narcotics into the United States. Agents meticulously pieced together evidence that pointed directly to Rodriguez-Sanchez’s involvement in the smuggling scheme. The case highlights the constant battle waged at the southern border against those who seek to profit from the misery of addiction.
United States Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr. announced the sentence, emphasizing the severity of the crime. HSI Special Agent in Charge Shane Folden and DEA Special Agent in Charge Joseph M. Arabit also lauded the collaborative effort that led to the successful prosecution. The lengthy prison term sends a clear message to would-be smugglers: attempting to bring dangerous drugs across the border will be met with swift and decisive justice.
Assistant United States Attorneys Goran Krnaich and Justin Chung were the driving forces behind the government’s case, skillfully presenting the evidence and securing the conviction. Rodriguez-Sanchez will now face the consequences of his actions, serving his 151-month sentence in a federal prison facility. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on further developments in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking.
