Jon Christopher Enriquez, a 47-year-old Miami man, pleaded guilty to posting online threats against Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Kristi Noem on May 27. Enriquez used the social media platform X to post multiple public threats targeting the two officials, threatening that they would be executed at specific times.
The threats were made in three separate public posts over the course of the afternoon, sparking a swift investigation by the Diplomatic Security Service, with assistance from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the City of Miami Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Enriquez faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison on each of the three counts of transmitting threats through interstate communications. A federal district court judge will determine his sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case highlights the seriousness with which law enforcement agencies take online threats against public officials. U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones warned that threatening public officials is not protected speech, but a federal crime that will be swiftly prosecuted.
