A 30-year-old Nebraska man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his role in a methamphetamine conspiracy in Iowa. Ryan Wilcox, from Omaha, Nebraska, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine on October 13, 2017.
According to court documents, Wilcox was involved in a conspiracy that distributed over 500 grams of methamphetamine in the Sioux City area from January 2017 through April 29, 2017. Law enforcement seized a digital scale, approximately 25 grams of methamphetamine, and a bag of syringes during a search of a hotel room registered to Wilcox.
During a post-Miranda interview, Wilcox admitted ownership of the methamphetamine and supplies in the hotel room. He was subsequently sentenced to 192 months’ imprisonment by United States District Court Chief Leonard T. Strand on March 13, 2018.
The court also imposed a special assessment of $100 and ordered Wilcox to serve an 8-year term of supervised release after his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Wilcox is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Mikala M. Steenholdt and investigated by the Tri-State Drug Task Force.
The Tri-State Drug Task Force is a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies, including the Sioux City Police Department, South Sioux City Police Department, Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Drug Enforcement Administration, Iowa Criminalistics, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Ryan Wilcox’s sentencing is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trade in Iowa. The lengthy prison term and special assessment serve as a reminder of the consequences of involvement in these types of crimes.
