Ryan Wright Pleads Guilty to Assault in South Dakota
In a disturbing incident that has left a community shaken, Ryan Wright, 27, of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. On November 14, 2012, Wright, after an evening of drinking to celebrate a move to a new residence, argued with other people present, left the residence but came back and hit the victim with his car, running the victim over several times.
The victim, who suffered fractures in his left ankle and pelvis, required surgery to recover from the brutal attack. Wright’s actions, which could have resulted in the victim’s death, have left many in the community grappling with the severity of his crimes.
Wright’s guilty plea comes after a thorough investigation conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant US Attorney Kathryn N. Rich is prosecuting the case, and Wright was remanded to the custody of the US Marshal pending sentencing.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both. A sentencing date has been set for April 1, 2013, and it remains to be seen what justice will be served in this case.
As the community begins to heal from this traumatic event, many are left wondering how such a senseless act of violence could occur. The fact that Wright’s actions could have resulted in the victim’s death only adds to the severity of the crime.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
