BAY CITY, MI – Turan West, 30, of Saginaw, is facing a long stretch behind bars after receiving a 162-month federal prison sentence for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentence, handed down yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Thomas L. Ludington, sends a clear message: criminals with a history aren’t getting a pass in this state.
The case, spearheaded by U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. and supported by James Deir, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), details a brazen attempt to evade law enforcement that nearly resulted in a far more tragic outcome. West pleaded guilty to the charge, acknowledging his illegal possession of a handgun despite a lengthy criminal record.
The incident unfolded in August of 2024 when Michigan State Police Troopers initiated a traffic stop in Saginaw. When troopers moved to remove the driver, West jumped into the driver’s seat and attempted to flee. He didn’t get far. West crashed the vehicle into an ambulance that had pulled over to assist, putting emergency personnel and the public at risk.
Inside the wrecked vehicle, troopers discovered a loaded handgun. This wasn’t a first offense for West; court documents confirm multiple prior felony convictions, making his possession of the firearm a federal crime. The ATF took over the investigation, building a solid case based on the evidence collected at the scene and West’s own admission of guilt.
