TYLER, Texas – Saleem Jeffer Jiwani, a 58-year-old local man, has copped to serious federal drug conspiracy charges in the Eastern District of Texas, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston.
Jiwani, who entered his guilty plea on May 31, 2017 before U.S. Magistrate Judge K. Nicole Mitchell, is now looking at up to 20 years behind bars for conspiracy to distribute and possess Schedule I controlled substances, as well as their analogues, and engaging in monetary transactions involving the illegal drugs.
The drug ring’s activities were finally brought to a halt on Aug. 4, 2016, when a joint task force of federal, state, and local law enforcement swooped in across Plano, Carrollton, Dallas, and Tyler, Texas. The operation was the result of an extensive investigation by the U.S. Drug Administration, Plano Police Department, Internal Revenue Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Smith County Sheriff’s Office.
According to court documents, Jiwani and his co-defendants had been distributing synthetic drugs from two retail locations: Minute Stop/Valero Gas Station in Tyler and Ashes Smokes and Tattoos in Plano. They were charged by a federal grand jury on Aug. 3, 2016.
While the maximum sentence is provided by Congress for informational purposes, Jiwani’s final punishment will be decided by the court based on guidelines and other factors after a presentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office.
This case has been a collaborative effort between DEA, Plano Police Department, IRS, ATF, and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Ann Cozby leading the prosecution.
