San Antonio’s Helen Benevides Mora Picaso, 44, has been slammed with a 20-month federal prison sentence and ordered to fork over $464,132.27 in restitution for her embezzlement spree.
The former office manager, who worked for a local businessman, was caught writing nearly 500 unauthorized checks to herself, family members, and to settle personal debts. United States Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr., and FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs announced the sentence.
Judge Orlando Garcia also imposed a three-year supervised release following her prison term. Picaso must surrender to federal authorities by February 9, 2017, to commence her sentence.
Picaso pleaded guilty to ten counts of embezzlement on November 9, 2015, admitting to the scheme that ran for over six years until her firing in May 2014. She confessed to falsifying check stubs to conceal the thefts.
This case was a joint effort between the FBI and Assistant United States Attorney Christina Playton’s office.
San Antonio residents are left reeling as another local figure falls from grace, a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to for financial gain.
