Local Man Sentenced to 35 Years for 2017 Murder

WASHINGTON DC – In a shocking turn of events, Saquan Williams, 22, of Washington D.C., has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for his role in a 2017 brazen shooting into a courtyard in the Potomac Gardens area of Southeast Washington.

A jury found Williams guilty on July 18, 2022, for conspiracy, first-degree murder while armed, participation in a criminal street gang, and other charges.

The incident occurred on September 10, 2017, at approximately 6 p.m. when victim Carl Hardy, 24, was standing outside in the Potomac Gardens neighborhood. Williams and three others circled the neighborhood three times looking for individuals to target before the vehicle stopped, and the driver paused to allow Williams and two other men to exit the vehicle armed with multiple weapons, including an assault rifle.

Williams and the two other shooters opened fire on the crowded courtyard, firing over 30 rounds and striking Mr. Hardy. The group then fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of destruction and a life lost. Mr. Hardy was transported to the hospital where doctors operated multiple times in their efforts to save him, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on October 1, 2017.

Williams and a second shooter, Quincy Garvin, were arrested and convicted at trial. Garvin’s sentencing is scheduled for September 29, 2023. In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Acting Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Pamela A. Smith commended the work of those who investigated the case, including the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office also acknowledged the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ryan Sellinger, Daniel Lenerz, and Sharon Donovan, as well as Supervisory Paralegal Specialist Tasha Harris and others who worked tirelessly to bring justice to the victim and his family.

As the community mourns the loss of Carl Hardy, the people of Washington D.C. can take comfort in knowing that those responsible for his tragic death are being held accountable. The 35-year sentence handed down to Saquan Williams is a stark reminder that violence will not be tolerated in our city.
