PUBLIC NUISANCE: Mother’s Fentanyl Overdose Kills Baby Boy

A devastating case of maternal negligence has led to a lengthy prison sentence for a Salt River woman. Sarah Caitlin Burnette, 23, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, or 180 months, for the fentanyl overdose death of her 18-month-old baby boy.

The tragic incident occurred on February 27, 2021, when Burnette’s child ingested the deadly synthetic opioid. The infant died due to acute fentanyl toxicity, a condition that can occur within minutes of exposure to the highly potent substance.

Burnette was initially charged with murder and child abuse for the fentanyl overdose death of her son, and for exposing another child to the same risk of death by fentanyl overdose. The Salt River Police Department and FBI jointly conducted the investigation, uncovering a disturbing pattern of reckless behavior by the defendant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer E. LaGrange and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Alane Breland handled the prosecution, with Breland also serving as the Chief Prosecutor for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

Burnette’s guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter marked a significant turning point in the case. The sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Steven P. Logan reflects the gravity of the defendant’s actions and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl and the devastating consequences of maternal negligence.

The case serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of fentanyl and the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of children.
