SCRANTON, PA – In a major blow to the local drug trade, Lee Wood, 48, has been hit with federal charges for trafficking cocaine. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced yesterday that Wood was indicted by a federal grand jury on drug trafficking allegations.
Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus revealed that the indictment claims Wood conspired with associates between May 28 and August 17, 2024, to distribute and possess over 500 grams of cocaine. The charges further allege that Wood himself distributed and possessed cocaine with intent to sell on August 8, 2024.
This high-profile case was jointly investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), and the Lackawanna County Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Lloyd is leading the prosecution.
Wood’s charges are part of Operation Take Back America, a DOJ-led initiative aimed at eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations and safeguarding communities from violent crime. The operation coordinates resources from various task forces within the Department of Justice.
The penalties for this offense under federal law are severe, with life imprisonment a possibility, along with supervised release and substantial fines. Any sentence will be determined by the court following a guilty verdict.
It is important to note that all persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
