Sean Darragh, Meth & Gun Battle, Utah 2021

SANDY, UT – A volatile drug deal turned into a firefight with law enforcement, landing Sean Dejesus Darragh, 54, of Sandy, Utah, a decade behind bars. Darragh was sentenced today to 120 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to possessing and intending to distribute methamphetamine, and possessing a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

The September 8, 2021, raid on Darragh’s home escalated quickly when he opened fire on officers with the Sandy City Police Department SWAT team executing a search warrant. The ensuing exchange of gunfire wounded both a SWAT officer and Darragh himself. Investigators recovered over 50 grams of methamphetamine from the residence, along with a Canik, Model TP9 Elite Combat, 9mm pistol used in the attack.

“The impact of this drug trafficking crime could have been far worse,” stated U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins of the District of Utah. While the statement echoes typical prosecutorial rhetoric, it underscores the danger posed by individuals combining illegal narcotics with firearms. The U.S. Attorney’s office vows continued vigilance in targeting drug traffickers who threaten the community.

ATF Special Agent in Charge Brent Beavers was blunt in his assessment: “The combination of illegal firearms and illicit drugs in the hands of a prohibited felon poses a grave threat to not only our communities, but also our law enforcement partners every day.” The ATF, along with the Sandy City and Salt Lake City Police Departments, jointly investigated the case, following Salt Lake County officer-involved shooting protocols.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stewart M. Young and Stephen L. Nelson successfully prosecuted Darragh, securing the 10-year sentence. The case was presented as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aiming to reduce violent crime and gun violence through coordinated law enforcement efforts. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, focusing on community trust, prevention, strategic enforcement, and measurable results.

Darragh’s case serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers and the devastating consequences of the drug trade. While the sentence offers a degree of closure, the incident highlights the ongoing battle against narcotics and the need for continued collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies to protect communities from violent offenders like Sean Dejesus Darragh.
