Sean Swiftbird, 27, and his mother Laurie Swiftbird, 67, have been making headlines in South Dakota for their involvement in a massive fentanyl trafficking ring.
According to court documents, Sean Swiftbird was the mastermind behind the operation, working with others in Sioux Falls to distribute thousands of fentanyl pills in 2023. His mother, Laurie Swiftbird, soon joined the conspiracy, accepting packages of pills at her home and selling them to customers.
The duo used the electronic payment system Cash App to accept proceeds from the sale of fentanyl pills and send them to their source, resulting in thousands of pills being trafficked in the Sioux Falls area.
Sean Swiftbird was sentenced on April 22, 2025, to 11 years in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Laurie Swiftbird, on the other hand, was sentenced to 2 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and also ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, IRS-Criminal Investigations, and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges leading the prosecution.
Sean Swiftbird was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, while Laurie Swiftbird was ordered to turn herself in by January 2026.
The Swiftbirds’ involvement in the fentanyl trafficking ring has sent shockwaves through the community, and their sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of this deadly crime.
