WICHITA, KAN — A dark cloud looms over Sedgwick County after a local man was charged with producing child pornography. Ian Nathanial Smith, 20, from Viola, Kansas, stands accused in U.S. District Court of sexual exploitation of a child and possessing child pornography.
The grim allegations surface that Smith, using social media as his medium, communicated with a 14-year-old girl across state lines. The affidavit paints a chilling picture of him asking the young victim to send live streaming video depicting her engaging in sexually explicit activities.
Authorities unearthed a harrowing cache of child pornography on Smith’s phone during their investigation. They found 204 images and four videos, all graphic and disturbing in nature.
If convicted, Smith could face a harsh sentence. He is staring down the barrel of not less than 15 years and up to 30 years in federal prison for exploiting a minor. The possession charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine that could soar to $250,000.
The FBI played a pivotal role in this investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart leading the prosecution against Smith.
In all cases, defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The indictments merely contain allegations of criminal conduct.
