Jacob Michael Martin, Bank and Identity Theft, Kansas 2024

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE — Wichita, Kan. – A brazen scheme to secure a $43,000 car loan using stolen identity has landed Jacob Michael Martin, 32, of Wichita, in federal prison for 45 months.

Martin pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. He admitted to assuming another man’s identity when he walked into CarMax, posing as the victim. With a counterfeit Kansas driver’s license featuring his own photo but the victim’s name, Martin applied for a loan to purchase a 2012 Jaguar. Wells Fargo Bank issued the fraudulent loan in the victim’s name, amounting to $43,599.47.

This case is one of many in an ongoing investigation into a large-scale identity theft and mail fraud ring. The indictment filed in May 2016 accused 13 individuals of collaborating to steal mail from mailboxes, forge identification documents, obtain fraudulent credit cards, and exploit stolen identities for financial gain.

The U.S. Attorney Tom Beall praised the efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department, Wichita Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger for their work in dismantling the criminal network.

Martin is now serving his sentence, a stark reminder of the consequences of identity theft and financial fraud. His case underscores the importance of robust security measures to protect personal information and the vigilant efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating such crimes.
