MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Tyrone Anthony Lamar Stewart, a 35-year-old Minneapolis resident, was sentenced to ten years in federal prison today after being caught with an illegal firearm. United States Attorney Erica H. MacDonald announced the guilty plea and sentence before Senior Judge Ann D. Montgomery in U.S. District Court.
Stewart’s crime spree began on October 9, 2019, when law enforcement from the South West Hennepin County Drug Task Force searched his residence in Minneapolis. During the raid, they uncovered approximately 60 grams of heroin, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, and two digital scales. Stewart had previous felony convictions, making it illegal for him to possess any firearms or ammunition.
This case is a product of an extensive investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, South West Hennepin County Drug Task Force, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The operation falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative to combat violent crime through coordinated efforts among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
Additionally, the case aligns with Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s campaign aimed at reducing gun violence and enforcing firearms laws across the nation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Calhoun-Lopez handled the prosecution for this significant case.
Stewart was handed a sentence of 120 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. His conviction on one count of possessing a firearm as a felon marks the culmination of a relentless effort to keep firearms out of the hands of felons.
