Darrell Murphy, a 42-year-old Ohio man, pleaded guilty to violating sex offender registration rules and failing to present at a designated border crossing in Maine. On December 31, 2025, Murphy illegally entered Canada by walking across a train trestle in Vanceboro, and then returned to the U.S. on January 5, 2026, without notifying authorities. Murphy was previously convicted in federal court in North Carolina for interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.
Murphy’s guilty plea stems from his failure to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), which requires registered sex offenders to provide advance notice of international travel. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that Murphy had not notified the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department of his intention to travel to Canada.
Murphy faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the SORNA violation. His sentence will be determined at a later date. The case was investigated by the U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Marshals Service.
Murphy’s actions demonstrate a clear disregard for the law and the safety of the community. His guilty plea is a significant step towards holding him accountable for his actions.
