A former Daytona Beach man’s ill-gotten gains are finally being stripped away, thanks to a federal forfeiture effort aimed at those who prey on children.
Dennis Brian Devlin, a convicted sex offender, has been ordered to forfeit $1,552,588.62, the proceeds from the sale of the Desert Inn Hotel in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 2011, Devlin was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for sexually exploiting a minor.
As part of his sentence, the court ordered Devlin to forfeit his interest in the Desert Inn, which he had used to facilitate his crimes. However, the titled owner of the hotel, Deslin Hotels, Inc., initially contested the forfeiture, claiming that Devlin did not have an interest in the property.
After months of litigation, Deslin Hotels, Inc. eventually reached a settlement with federal authorities, agreeing to forfeit $1,552,588.62 – the amount representing Devlin’s interest in the hotel’s sale proceeds.
The investigation into Devlin’s crimes was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the forfeiture case was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Nicole M. Andrejko.
This case is a prime example of the success of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood has helped marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet.
The forfeited funds will be used to support ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse.
