Kai Whitney Sommers, a 38-year-old registered sex offender from Ventura, California, has pleaded guilty to sex trafficking two minors just two months after his release from state prison. Sommers, who was convicted of child sex crimes in 2021, was arrested in June 2024 and has been in federal custody ever since. He was released from state prison in June 2023, but quickly returned to his old habits, using online platforms to entice and coerce minors into prostitution.
According to court documents, Sommers used a messaging platform geared towards teens to communicate with a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl. He convinced one victim to produce child sexual abuse material and the other to provide fully clothed images, which he then posted on an adult website as commercial sex advertisements. Sommers’ devices were searched by Ventura County Probation in August 2023, revealing the disturbing evidence of his crimes.
Sommers’ plea agreement comes as a result of a thorough investigation by law enforcement, who identified the victims and gathered evidence of Sommers’ crimes. His guilty plea is a significant step towards justice for the victims and their families. Sommers will face sentencing for his crimes, and his plea agreement will likely result in a significant prison term.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of sex trafficking in California and the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies. The FBI and other agencies are working to combat sex trafficking and protect vulnerable minors from predators like Sommers.
