Wheeling Man Admits to Possessing Stolen Firearm

A Wheeling man has admitted to a firearms charge after pleading guilty to possessing a stolen firearm, United States Attorney William Ihlenfeld announced.

Shawn Brookins, 37, of Wheeling, West Virginia, pleaded guilty today to one count of “Possession of a Stolen Firearm” in federal court. Brookins admitted to having a 9mm Smith and Wesson firearm that had been stolen in June 2019 in Ohio County.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer T. Conklin is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and the Wheeling Police Department investigated the crime.

U.S. Magistrate Judge James P. Mazzone presided over the hearing.

The investigation into the stolen firearm began in June 2019 after the firearm was reported stolen in Ohio County. Brookins was identified as the individual possessing the stolen firearm and subsequently taken into custody.

The guilty plea is a significant development in the case, and Brookins’ sentence will be determined at a later date.

As a result of the plea, Brookins is facing the possibility of federal prison time and fines. The exact sentence will be determined by the court at a later date.
