Jerome Weaver, Armed Assault, New Mexico 2024

Shiprock’s Jerome Weaver has been sentenced to three years of probation following a brutal armed assault that injured two adults. The 22-year-old, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, meted out violence at a Shiprock residence on July 9, 2024, while under the influence. Weaver choked one victim and pressed a loaded handgun with a laser attachment to the other’s head. A minor witnessed the horror and promptly dialed 911. Upon arrival, law enforcement found the victims injured and Weaver in possession of a firearm. He surrendered without incident, marking the end of a terrifying ordeal.

Upon his release from any potential prison term, Weaver will be subjected to three years of supervised release, ensuring his movements are closely monitored. The charges against him were severe, yet parole is non-existent in the federal system. U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Acting Special Agent in Charge Philip Russell of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office announced the sentencing today.

This case was meticulously investigated by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office with support from the Navajo Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Brittany DuChaussee handled the prosecution with tenacity, seeing justice served for the victims who suffered at Weaver’s hands.

Shiprock residents are relieved that a violent chapter in their community has come to an end. Weaver’s actions have sparked discussions about the need for increased security and intervention programs within tribal communities to prevent such senseless acts of violence from recurring.

For those affected by the incident, the sentencing may bring some closure but also serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who abuse weapons under the influence. The Navajo Nation’s leaders have expressed their commitment to working with federal and local law enforcement agencies to address this issue head-on.
