It’s a hammer blow in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking. A 29-year-old Sinaloa, Mexico native has been locked up for 70 months after being caught red-handed in East Texas’ methamphetamine trade.
Joeli Higuera Fernandez, the man behind this scheme, pleaded guilty on May 3, 2013, to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine. The sentencing took place on Aug. 28, 2013, by U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap.
Fernandez’s crime spree spanned from March 2010 to October 2012, during which he admitted to distributing a hefty 101.7 grams of the illegal substance. The grand jury indicted Fernandez and three others on drug trafficking violations on Nov. 7, 2012.
This sentence is a testament to the relentless effort of law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Marshall Police Department, and Harrison County District Attorney’s Office worked tirelessly to bring this criminal to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Allen Hurst led the prosecution.
As part of his conviction, Fernandez was also ordered to forfeit $15,000 in currency, reflecting the financial scale of his operations. This case serves as a stark reminder of the organized nature of drug trafficking and the lengths some will go to for profit.
Higuera Fernandez’s fate now rests with the federal prison system, where he will serve out the remainder of his sentence, while justice is served for those affected by his illegal activities.
