A 27-year-old Waterloo man has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Sir Frank Nelson III, a member of the A1/Front Street criminal street gang in Waterloo, was found with a loaded, stolen Smith and Wesson M&P .40 caliber firearm during a traffic stop on June 28, 2020. At the time of the stop, he was also in possession of marijuana.
Nelson pleaded guilty to the charge on May 18, 2022, and was sentenced to 37 months’ imprisonment on October 12, 2022. He was also fined $100 and must serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Nelson was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Liz Dupuich and was investigated by a Federal Task Force composed of the Waterloo Police Department’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT), Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms assisted by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar Falls Police Department.
Nelson is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
