In a disturbing case of child exploitation, 40-year-old Lincoln Duane Wanna of Sisseton, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his heinous crime of abusive sexual contact with a juvenile female.
Wanna’s despicable actions began when the victim was just seven years old and continued until she was 12 years old. His repeated abuse of the child is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of sexual violence on its victims.
The case was brought to light in July 2022, when Wanna was indicted by a federal grand jury for Abusive Sexual Contact and Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. He eventually pleaded guilty to Abusive Sexual Contact on November 20, 2023.
The conviction was made possible through the efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which prosecuted the case due to the federal government’s jurisdiction over violent crimes committed in Indian country. The Major Crimes Act mandates that such cases be prosecuted in federal court.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.
Wanna’s sentence also includes five years of supervised release and a statutorily required special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to continue serving his sentence. The FBI and the Sisseton Wahpeton Law Enforcement investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jeremy R. Jehangiri and Elizabeth A. Ebert prosecuting the case.
