Bankston was sentenced to 14 years for her role in a string of scams that resulted in over $73,000 in losses. She and conspirator Jocelyn Hale, who received a 45-month sentence, defrauded several banks and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
The duo used stolen identities to fund accounts at Wells Fargo Bank with counterfeit funds totaling $13,027.22 and obtained illegally obtained funds for another account. Bankston also defrauded ODJFS by holding mail and stealing cards, causing further losses.
United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach called the defendant’s actions ‘stealing from banks, private citizens and the government.’ Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation, Kathy Enstrom, emphasized the seriousness of identity theft and vowed to hold such criminals accountable.
The sentence reflects a coordinated effort between the Internal Revenue Service, FBI, and United States Postal Service, according to Assistant United States Attorney Mark S. Bennett, who prosecuted the case.
