Bank Robbery Sentences Handed Down
Fort Myers, Florida – A federal court has sentenced two men to lengthy prison terms for their roles in a series of bank robberies in Lee County.
Michael James Harrell, 33, of Fort Myers, was sentenced to 62 years in federal prison, while Matthew Rollins, 27, also of Fort Myers, received a 42-year sentence.
The men were found guilty of armed bank robbery, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, attempted bank robbery, conspiracy to commit armed bank robbery, and conspiracy to use firearms during a crime of violence.
The crimes relate to a series of bank robberies that took place in Lee County between June 6, 2011, and October 7, 2011.
Harrowing details emerged during the trial, revealing that Harrell, Rollins, and a third participant, Maurice Andre Colbert, conspired to rob area banks with firearms.
The jury found the men guilty of armed robbery and related weapons charges in connection with the robberies of the Lee County Postal Employees Credit Union, Wells Fargo Bank in Lehigh Acres, and Preferred Community Bank in Lehigh Acres.
The men were also found guilty of attempting to rob Wells Fargo Bank in Bonita Springs, Capital Bank in Fort Myers, and Fifth Third Bank in Fort Myers.
A third participant, Maurice Andre Colbert, will be sentenced on June 20, 2013.
The case was the result of a cooperative effort among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and Fort Myers Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey F. Michelland prosecuted the case.
