LINCOLN, NEBRASKA – Tanner Hudson, 27, of Spalding, Nebraska, will spend the next sixteen years of his life behind bars after being sentenced for distributing a lethal dose of fentanyl disguised as a common painkiller. United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced the sentencing on July 24, 2025, following a hearing in federal court.
Hudson received 192 months – sixteen years – from United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis. Crucially, there is no parole in the federal system, meaning Hudson will serve the entirety of his sentence. Upon release, he will face an additional three years of supervised release, a small comfort to the victim’s family.
The grim details of the case reveal that on March 13, 2022, Hudson knowingly provided a round blue pill to a victim, falsely representing it as Percocet. Text messages recovered by investigators, along with direct interviews, confirmed Hudson’s awareness of the pill’s true, dangerous nature. Within an hour, the victim lost consciousness.
What followed was a desperate race against time. The victim’s roommate discovered them unconscious and suffering from pulmonary edema roughly five hours later. Quick thinking led the roommate to call for emergency services. First responders administered Narcan, but the damage was already done. Medical professionals determined the victim suffered two episodes of ventricular fibrillation and, critically, severe cerebral edema – resulting in catastrophic neurological damage. The victim now remains in a vegetative state, a horrifying consequence of Hudson’s actions.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Kearney Police Department, meticulously pieced together the events leading up to the near-fatal overdose. The evidence clearly demonstrated Hudson’s role in the distribution of the deadly fentanyl, leading to the federal charges and, ultimately, this substantial sentence. This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of fentanyl and the ruthless individuals who profit from its spread.
Attorney Woods emphasized that the Department of Justice remains committed to prosecuting those who distribute this dangerous drug and hold them accountable for the immense harm they inflict on communities. The lengthy sentence handed down to Hudson sends a clear message: peddling death carries severe consequences. The Kearney Police Department continues to investigate related cases, and further charges are possible.
