Spanish Woman’s Illicit Re-entry Sparks Guilty Plea
Syracuse, NY – In a shocking turn of events, 49-year-old Maria Martinez, a/k/a Maria Josefa Munagorri Diaz from Madrid, Spain, has pleaded guilty to attempting to illegally re-enter the United States.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Steven Bronson, United States Customs and Border Protection Port Director for the Champlain Port of Entry.
Martinez’s guilty plea came after it was discovered that she presented herself at the Champlain Port of Entry for admission to the United States on August 8, 2016. She presented a passport in the name of “Maria Josefa Munagorri Diaz,” but a fingerprint scan revealed her arrest record and prior deportation.
The move is a direct result of Martinez’s conviction for conspiracy to distribute cocaine in the Northern District of Ohio back in 2002. Following a 32-month prison sentence, she was deported from the United States.
As a result of her conviction, Martinez faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 when she is sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Norman A. Mordue on May 30, 2017.
This case was investigated by United States Customs and Border Protection and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Collyer. The guilty plea is a stark reminder of the harsh consequences that await those who attempt to re-enter the United States illegally, despite having a prior conviction.
Martinez’s case serves as a warning to individuals with prior convictions who think they can evade the law by attempting to re-enter the country without proper clearance. The fact that she was caught through a fingerprint scan highlights the effectiveness of modern border control measures.
As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how Martinez’s guilty plea will impact her future prospects. One thing is certain, however – she will face the full force of the law for her actions.
