Louisiana’s sex crime statistics just got a little darker. A New Iberia man has been handed a hefty prison sentence for distributing child pornography across the internet.
On February 18, 2020, Spencer Matthew Legendre, 23, of New Iberia, Louisiana, was actively exchanging images of prepubescent children on a Kik group. Undercover agent ‘legend_re’ with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) engaged in the chat, and upon further investigation, identified the username to be the defendant’s.
Agents obtained a search warrant for Legendre’s residence on February 27, 2020, where he confessed to downloading and distributing child pornography. His cell phone was seized, revealing numerous images of prepubescent children. A forensic examination of the phone confirmed that Legendre distributed child pornography on February 18, 2020.
The FBI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Luke Walker prosecuted the case. The conviction is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Spencer Matthew Legendre has been sentenced to 72 months in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release. He has also been ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution. This harsh sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of distributing child pornography and the consequences that come with it.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of child exploitation and the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community. The public is urged to report any suspicions of child exploitation to the authorities.
