SIOUX CITY, IA – Dana Eugene Igou, 41, of Spencer, Iowa, is headed to federal prison for over 14 years after being sentenced today for a sprawling methamphetamine conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms. Igou’s history of violence and repeat offenses landed him a harsh sentence, reflecting the danger he posed to the community.
Igou pleaded guilty on January 22, 2025, to one count of possession of firearms by a drug user and domestic abuse misdemeanant, and one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Federal prosecutors proved that Igou and his associates conspired to distribute at least 500 grams of the highly addictive drug. The investigation revealed a pattern of brazen disregard for the law, compounded by his continued access to weapons.
The case began to unravel in December of 2023, when Igou was pulled over for a traffic violation. Officers discovered a 9 mm handgun and a small amount of methamphetamine in his vehicle. This alone was enough to trigger federal charges, given Igou’s prior felony convictions and a conviction for a crime of domestic violence, which prohibited him from legally possessing firearms. But Igou didn’t stop there.
Just three months later, on March 14, 2024, law enforcement arrested Igou again. This time, the search yielded even more illegal weaponry – additional firearms, ammunition, and brass knuckles – along with nearly 9 ounces of methamphetamine. The sheer volume of drugs and weapons, combined with his criminal history, led prosecutors to designate Igou as a career offender, triggering a significantly harsher sentencing guideline.
United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the 170-month (14 years, 2 months) prison sentence in Sioux City. Following his release, Igou will be subject to a 5-year term of supervised release. Unlike state systems, there is no parole in the federal system, meaning Igou will serve his entire sentence. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service awaiting transport to a designated federal prison.
The successful prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Jack Lammers, with critical investigative work conducted by a multi-agency task force comprised of the Estherville Police Department, Spirit Lake Police Department, Spencer Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
