A former law enforcement officer has been found guilty of attempting to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex after a sting operation by federal authorities in Washington state.
Koby Don Williams, 49, of Spokane, was convicted of one count of Attempted Online Enticement of a Minor after a three-day chat with an undercover officer posing as a 13-year-old girl on Craigslist in 2022.
According to the Department of Justice, Williams replied to the ad and continued to chat with the officer over text message, discussing the girl’s age and rates for sex acts, as well as his employment as a “cop.” He even made arrangements to meet the girl at a hotel, but was instead arrested by law enforcement.
A search of Williams’ vehicle and person turned up his Immigration and Customs Enforcement badge, two bottles of prescription medication, and $4,075 in cash, which was found in a credit union envelope.
Williams’ sentencing is set for August 14, 2024, after he was found guilty by a jury on May 14, 2024. United States Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref praised the work of her office in bringing the case to justice, saying, “No one is above the law, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office is fully committed to vigorously prosecuting those who target the most vulnerable members of our community.”
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The case was investigated by the FBI, DHS/OIG, and the Othello Police Department, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ann Wick.
Williams’ conduct is a stark reminder of the dangers of online predators and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to protect children from exploitation. His conviction is a testament to the commitment of the U.S. Attorney’s Office to upholding the integrity of its mission to protect and serve the community.
