Michele M. DiSalvo, a 53-year-old Gardner woman, pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud in federal court in Worcester, Massachusetts. Between 2013 and 2023, DiSalvo falsely claimed to be separated from her husband to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits. In reality, the couple lived together, making DiSalvo ineligible for the benefits. DiSalvo’s deception began in June 2014 and continued for nearly a decade, with her submitting a fraudulent lease agreement in October 2023 to conceal her living situation.
As a result of her fraudulent activities, DiSalvo received $93,640 in SSI disability benefits that she was not entitled to. The scheme was uncovered, and DiSalvo was charged in February 2026. She pleaded guilty to one count of receipt of stolen government money or property, one count of Social Security fraud, and one count of false statements.
DiSalvo’s guilty plea comes with significant potential consequences. She faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater. U.S. District Court Judge Margaret R. Guzman has scheduled sentencing for July 16, 2026.
The case highlights the importance of honesty in the application and maintenance of government benefits. The Social Security Administration relies on accurate information from applicants to determine eligibility for benefits. By falsifying her living situation, DiSalvo not only broke the law but also undermined the integrity of the system.
