Tampa, Florida – In a stunning turn of events, Jared Borgesto Murray, 41, of St. Petersburg, has been sentenced to four years and nine months in federal prison for orchestrating a $1.2 million fraud scheme while serving time in a Florida state prison.
Murray, who pleaded guilty on March 24, 2025, was convicted of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud. Court documents reveal that between January 2019 and September 2020, Murray orchestrated the scheme from behind bars, targeting a nationwide merchant.
Using dozens of customers’ store accounts, Murray fraudulently purchased products, leading to the merchant losing $1,260,495.89. The fraudulent proceeds were funneled through online sales at substantial discounts by Murray and his conspirators, who sold the stolen goods via phone and email from the confines of the state prison.
Murray utilized contraband phones to identify customers with open lines of credit, impersonate them, and place orders for products. The scheme was so sophisticated that it included directing individuals to pick up fraud proceeds or stolen products, ensuring a seamless operation.
Not content with merely executing the fraud, Murray also used some of the proceeds to build a house in Lake Placid, Florida, which was later forfeited by law enforcement along with $43,550 in seized fraud proceeds from his bank accounts.
This case has been a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Tampa Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Jennifer L. Peresie and Suzanne Nebesky handled the prosecution.
