WASHINGTON D.C. – Robert Sheffield, 34, of Washington D.C., is headed to federal prison for nine years after admitting his role in a brazen string of armed robberies targeting South Asian jewelers. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the sentencing today, bringing a measure of closure to a case that spanned multiple states and left a trail of terror and financial ruin.
Sheffield, known on the streets as “Da Real Lifaa,” pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery – a Hobbs Act violation – and to possessing a firearm during a crime of violence. Judge Christopher R. Cooper handed down the 108-month sentence, followed by five years of supervised release. Sheffield was a key member of a 15-person crew allegedly led by Trevor Wright, also known as rapper “Taliban Glizzy,” who remains at large.
The crew systematically targeted jewelry stores, racking up millions in stolen cash and gold over an 18-month period beginning in January 2022. Sheffield’s direct involvement was confirmed in the November 10, 2023, robbery of Baral Jewelers in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where $1 million in goods were stolen. He acted as a gunman during the April 28, 2023, attempted robbery of Yasini Jewelers in Falls Church, Virginia, a chaotic scene where the store owner returned fire, leading to a shootout.
Court documents paint a grim picture of the Harrisburg heist. Sheffield and several accomplices descended on Baral Jewelers in two vehicles, with some acting as lookouts while others stormed inside. While two co-conspirators subdued customers and employees in the front of the store, Sheffield and three others ransacked the rear, smashing display cases and stuffing gold jewelry into bags. The scene was one of pure terror, with victims cowering in fear as the robbers worked with ruthless efficiency.
The brazenness of the crew extended beyond the robberies themselves. A week after the Harrisburg job, a co-defendant publicly flaunted Sheffield’s ill-gotten gains on social media – a photo of Sheffield fanning a stack of cash. Days later, Sheffield was captured on video purchasing an $11,500 Rolex watch with the stolen money at a Prince George’s Mall jewelry store. The video served as damning evidence of their lavish spending and disregard for the law. The April 28th robbery of Yasini Jewelers, while unsuccessful in terms of stolen loot, escalated the violence, with both the robbers and the store owner exchanging gunfire.
While Sheffield’s sentencing marks a significant step forward, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are still pursuing the remaining members of the 15-person crew, including alleged ringleader Trevor Wright. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by business owners and the relentless pursuit of justice by federal law enforcement.
