STATESBORO, GA – Steve Lavon Biggins, 33, of Savannah, Georgia has been convicted of transporting a minor with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, production of child pornography, and transportation of child pornography.
A federal jury delivered the guilty verdict after a two-day trial in U.S. District Court Judge B. Avant Edenfield’s courtroom. Biggins was also found guilty of production of child pornography and transportation of child pornography.
According to the U.S. Attorney Edward Tarver, Biggins misrepresented his identity and age to gain the trust of a 16-year-old girl he met online. He then transported her across the southeast, engaging in illicit sex acts and taking photographs of the activity.
Biggins’ arrest rescued one victim and his conviction will help protect other children from such future predatory acts, Tarver said.
Ricky Maxwell, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Atlanta Field Office, praised the combined law enforcement response that led to Biggins’ conviction. The FBI, along with the Millen Police Department, Jenkins County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, worked together to bring Biggins to justice.
The evidence presented during the trial revealed that Biggins, posing as a man in his twenties named ‘Rodney,’ engaged in text and telephone communications with the victim through the mobile application ‘Tagged.com.’ He then took the child on short-haul trips that spanned seven days, traveling to South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina before returning to Georgia.
Biggins faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, with a maximum of life, for the transportation of a minor charge. He also faces 15 to 30 years on the production of child pornography charge and 5 to 20 years on the transportation of child pornography charge. Each charge carries a fine of up to $250,000 and between 5 years and life of supervised release.
