Sex Trafficking Scheme Exposed
A 48-year-old Buffalo man has pleaded guilty to sex trafficking minors, putting his freedom and future at risk. Steven Gonzalez, also known as Steven Hernandez, Stevie, and Unc, has been convicted of sex trafficking by coercion, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years in prison, a maximum of life, and a $250,000 fine.
According to court documents, Gonzalez coerced two minors, identified as A.N. and B.E., into engaging in commercial sex acts between 2012 and 2015. He provided cocaine and heroin to the victims in exchange for sex, knowing they were physically addicted to the substances. Gonzalez used their addiction to keep them dependent on him and coerce them into engaging in commercial sex acts.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joel L. Violanti and Caitlin M. Higgins stated that Gonzalez’s actions were a clear example of sex trafficking by coercion. They emphasized that Gonzalez’s use of the victims’ addiction to exploit them is a common tactic used by traffickers to maintain control over their victims.
The investigation into Gonzalez’s activities was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia. The agency’s efforts have brought Gonzalez to justice and will hopefully serve as a warning to others who engage in similar crimes.
Gonzalez’s sentencing is scheduled for November 26, 2024, before U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr. The District Attorney’s Office and law enforcement agencies are urging the public to remain vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity that may indicate sex trafficking.
