A Roanoke County doctor, Steven Joseph Collins, 51, of Roanoke County, Virginia, has admitted to possessing and distributing child pornography.
Between July 2010 and July 2013, Collins received digital video and image files of minors engaging in sexual activity, including prepubescent children engaging in oral sex with adult males.
Collins also pleaded guilty to prescribing oxycodone outside the usual course of professional practice. In one instance, he wrote a prescription for oxycodone in the name of a patient’s husband to avoid having too many prescriptions in the patient’s name.
The investigation was conducted by the Tactical Diversion Squad (TDS) of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Department of Homeland Security. Assistant United States Attorney Jennie L.M. Waering is prosecuting the case for the United States.
Collins faces a period of incarceration between five years and twenty years at sentencing. He has admitted to receiving child pornography and dispensing oxycodone by illegal prescribing.
The case highlights the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat child exploitation and prescription drug abuse. The TDS is comprised of law enforcement officers from various agencies, including the Virginia State Police, Roanoke County Police Department, and the DEA.
The sentencing date for Collins has not been announced. He will face a period of incarceration between five years and twenty years for his crimes.
The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s office to protecting the public and holding those responsible for these crimes accountable.
