Tacoma man, Steven Nicholas Corona, 37, faces serious charges of producing child pornography, a crime punishable by a mandatory minimum 15 years in prison and up to 30 years, as announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman.
According to the criminal complaint, Australian law enforcement contacted U.S. law enforcement in December 2022 regarding images of sexual abuse of a young child that had been shared on the internet. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) identified Corona as the person who posted the photos and determined that the material had been created between June and September 2019.
The investigation revealed that Corona had been living with the child’s household and provided childcare at times during this period, making the allegations even more disturbing.
An initial appearance for Corona is scheduled for 2:00 PM today in U.S. District Court in Tacoma.
The charges contained in the criminal complaint are only allegations. A person is presumed innocent unless and until he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Hampton handling the prosecution.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
