Syracuse, NEW YORK – In a stunning turn of events, Anthony Beverly, 34, was arraigned today for his involvement in a federal drug and firearm conspiracy. The gritty streets of Syracuse were again the scene of justice as Beverly, a known local figure, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a prohibited person.
United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, FBI Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli, and Chief of the Syracuse Police Department Joseph L. Cecile stood together to make this announcement. According to court documents, Beverly’s crimes were committed with malicious intent on October 26, 2023.
Details emerged that Beverly was found in his Onondaga County apartment with three pistols, extended ammunition magazines, and an arsenal of approximately 615 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition spanned various calibers, indicating a well-planned operation. However, Beverly’s criminal history did not end there. He further admitted to having been convicted of a felony in 2015 for possession of a forged instrument in the first degree, which disqualified him from owning firearms.
In addition to his firearm violations, Beverly confessed to possessing various controlled substances within his apartment. These substances included cocaine base, powder cocaine, N,N-Dimethylpentylone (also known as ‘molly’), fentanyl, and methamphetamine. His intent was clear: he planned to distribute these drugs to others, fueling the streets with more danger.
Beverly now faces a harsh sentence of up to 35 years in federal prison, a massive fine totaling $1,250,000, and a term of post-imprisonment supervised release that could last for life. The severity of his punishment will be determined by the court based on the statutes violated, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other relevant factors.
The investigation was carried out by the FBI and the Syracuse Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew J. McCrobie handling the prosecution. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in our neighborhoods. The PSN strategy focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results to make neighborhoods safer for all.
