GRIMY NEWS: Tampa’s Anthony Michael Harris has been sentenced to six years for a stunning medical identity theft scheme.
Harris, aged 26 and from Tampa, was found guilty of conspiracy and aggravated identity theft after pleading guilty on November 29, 2016. The judge, U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore, issued the sentence.
According to court documents, Harris, while employed as an administrative employee at a pediatric gastroenterology practice, conspired with Larry Chance Cox and Maurice Rahmaan to steal personal information from patients, their parents, and guardians. This data was then used to apply for credit cards online and file fraudulent federal income tax returns, all under the stolen identities.
Investigators found that over 13,000 individuals’ personally identifiable information had been misappropriated by Harris and his co-conspirators. In addition, they attempted to file around 180 fraudulent tax returns.
Larry Chance Cox has pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing on April 3, 2017, while Maurice Rahmaan will be sentenced on April 10, 2017, following his own guilty plea.
This harrowing case was a collaboration between the Tampa Police Department, the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, and the United States Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney Mandy Riedel is handling the prosecution.
