A Tea woman’s greed has landed her in hot water. Brittany Enstad, 40, was sentenced to two years of probation and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100 for Obtaining a Controlled Substance by Misrepresentation, Fraud, Forgery, Deception, and Subterfuge, a federal crime.
Enstad, a registered nurse at the Sanford Canton-Inwood Medical Center in Canton, South Dakota, used her position to obtain OxyContin, a powerful painkiller, for her own personal use. Between July 1, 2022, and December 30, 2022, Enstad tampered with blister packs containing OxyContin, replacing the pills with less potent medications like melatonin and acetaminophen.
The tampered blister packs were then dispensed to patients at the medical center, putting their health at risk. “Patients deserve to have confidence that they are receiving the proper treatment from those entrusted with providing their medical care. Those who knowingly tamper with medicines for patients put those patients’ health at risk,” said Special Agent in Charge Ronne Malham, FDA Office of Criminal Investigations, Chicago Field Office.
Enstad’s scheme was uncovered by the Food and Drug Administration – Office of Criminal Investigation and the DEA. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann M. Hoffman prosecuted the case.
Enstad’s conviction is a stark reminder that healthcare professionals who abuse their position will be held accountable. “Our office will continue to pursue and bring to justice healthcare professionals who take advantage of their position and compromise patients’ health and comfort by tampering with needed drugs,” Malham said.
The case against Enstad serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit their position for personal gain. As U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell noted, “The public has a right to trust that those in positions of authority will act with integrity and uphold the law.”
Enstad pleaded guilty on March 6, 2024, and was sentenced on May 24, 2024. Her two-year probation sentence and $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund are a fitting penalty for her crimes.
