Antonio Gaither, Violent Carjacking, Washington 2024

⏱ 3 min read

A teenage carjacking kingpin has gotten a lucky break in Washington D.C. after a string of robberies and carjackings in September 2024.

Seventeen-year-old Antonio Gaither was sentenced to a fully suspended sentence, with just 18 months of supervised probation, for a carjacking and two robberies that took place in September 2024.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office had requested a 12-year prison sentence for Gaither, but Judge Jennifer DiToro handed down a much lighter sentence under the Youth Rehabilitation Act.

The act allows for reduced sentences for defendants under 21, but prosecutors argued that Gaither should still face significant prison time due to the severity of the crimes.

According to the government, Gaither and his co-defendant Derrick West pulled up next to a victim in the 500 block of 48th Place NE on September 19, 2024, and demanded that she hand over her car at gunpoint.

The victim was able to escape, but two others were not so lucky. On September 20, 2024, Gaither and West were involved in another carjacking, this time in the 800 block of P Street NW.
