Manuel Joseph Rose III, Carjacking, California 2024

⏱ 2 min read

A July 3, 2024, evening ride turned deadly for a San Diego cabdriver when Manuel Joseph Rose III pulled a gun on him at a 7-Eleven. The cabbie, fearing for his life, dropped the keys and fled. Rose took off in the stolen cab, leading cops on a high-speed chase that ended with him ditching the vehicle in North Park.

Chula Vista police eventually caught up with Rose and found DNA and a hat of his in the cab. The cabbie identified him as the culprit, but Rose initially denied any involvement. A jury convicted Rose in two separate trials of carjacking, brandishing a firearm during a violent crime, and possessing thousands of rounds of ammunition as a convicted felon.

‘An armed carjacking is more than a theft – it is a violent crime that leaves lasting trauma for victims,’ said U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon. ‘This sentence reflects the serious danger posed when a convicted felon arms himself and threatens innocent people.’

Rose, now 10 years behind bars, will have plenty of time to reflect on his actions that night. The cabdriver, lucky to have escaped with his life, will never forget the terror he faced at the hands of Rose.
