BATON ROUGE, LA – A local man is facing serious time behind bars after pleading guilty to a major marijuana trafficking charge.
Thanh Tran, 41, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, entered a guilty plea to one count of possession with the intent to distribute marijuana in federal court. The conviction comes with a significant term of imprisonment, fine, and a period of supervised release for Tran.
According to records, in September 2017, Baton Rouge Police Department narcotics detectives received information that Tran was involved in the distribution of controlled substances. The detectives conducted surveillance of Tran at an apartment complex in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and observed him place two large black trash bags in the back of his BMW SUV.
Tran was stopped by police and claimed to have 15 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle. However, a search of the vehicle revealed approximately 30 pounds of suspected marijuana and about $10,000 in cash. Additionally, Tran was found to have approximately $5,000 in cash in his pockets.
At the time of his arrest, Tran was on supervised release from a previous federal conviction of conspiracy to distribute MDMA.
U.S. Attorney Brandon J. Fremin commended the hard work of the DEA and the Baton Rouge Police Department in their efforts to combat the illegal drug trade. ‘This conviction is yet another example of our office’s commitment to fighting the illegal drug trade and those who willingly violate our federal drug laws,’ Fremin stated.
